TODAYonline | Singapore | When a paddle a day keeps the litter away

THE stench from the Singapore River may be a thing of the past, as Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong said during his National Day Rally, but efforts are still needed to keep its waters clean.

In the first social responsibility event organised by a Singapore Institute of Management student sports club, around 40 students paddled some 10km from the Marina Barrage to the Singapore River to pick up floating litter.

The half-day "river clean-up" on Sunday by the SIM Canoe Club was in response to the Saving Gaia campaign and initiative.

The students hoped the event would raise awareness about keeping the area clean and also benefit, in particular, the dragon boat and canoes teams as well as other sports clubs using the area.

The trash collected was separated into recyclables and non-recyclables.
